The “Gunny’ has passed away. According to his manager Bill Rogin, Lee Ermey passed away from complications due to pneumonia. Born in Emporia, Kansas, on March 24, 1944, Ronald Lee Ermey was an American actor and voice actor. He achieved fame when he played Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the 1987 film Full Metal Jacket, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He spent two years as a drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. He was medically retired due to injuries in 1971 and was given an honorary promotion to gunnery sergeant in 2002.
Most people are familiar with his legendary role in the 1987 Stanley Kubrick film “Full Metal Jacket” where he played the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. This role helped launch him into the limelight in films and on TV with his “Gunny”persona.
However to horror movie fans,they may also remember R.Lee Ermey for his role as a ghost Gunny in ‘The Frightners’.
On a personal note, I had the opportunity to meet R.Lee Ermey and to this day, I will always remember his energy and kindness.
He is survived by his wife, Marianila Ermey; his brothers Jack Ermey and Terry Ermey; his children Kim Bolt, Rhonda Chilton, Anna Liza Cruz, Betty Ermey, Evonne Ermey and Clinton Ermey; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
